The first shock of the Toto Cup day hit TSV 1860 Munich in the afternoon. Shortly before 5 p.m., the third division soccer team announced that right-back Kevin Goden had tested positive for Covid-19 and had therefore gone into quarantine. And so he was not the only one who fell out of the round of 16 at the strong regional league club SV Wacker Burghausen: “Even the unvaccinated players from the Löwen squad are not allowed to play in the Toto Cup round of 16 and have gone into quarantine,” wrote TSV 1860 “In coordination with the health authorities, all players from the professional squad who were fully vaccinated may be used in the Toto Cup game against Burghausen.” However, there was also no head coach Michael Köllner, who had not yet fully completed the waiting period after the vaccination.
In addition to Goden and Köllner, Phillipp Steinhart and Yannick Deichmann were also hit; Sascha Mölders was not there, but not in quarantine, but in rest for the upcoming third division game on Sunday in Halle. Thus, the 16 players who were fit to play were found on the report sheet that were required, and the game took place. This rule, which was still an advantage for the Lions in the DFB Cup first round win against Darmstadt 98, was also used in the Toto Cup.
The second shock of the day for the Lions followed in the second minute of the game: Penalty for Burghausen after a foul by Semi Belkahia, who, like Daniel Wein, returned to Andre Leipold after a long injury break. But the former lion Nicholas Helmbrecht shot past the penalty kick – and symbolically initiated the evening: TSV 1860 won 7: 6 (2: 2, 1: 0) on penalties and made it to the quarter-finals.
After the early penalty whistle, Munich took the game into their own hands and immediately came up with the first chances. A shot by Richard Neudecker just missed (6th), Marcel Bär was unable to take advantage of a mistake by Wacker goalkeeper Markus Schöller (9th). The Löwen lead seemed only a matter of time, and it was: A cross from Niklas Lang slipped through the Burghauser central defense to the far post, where Bär had little trouble this time getting the ball into the goal (27. ). On the other hand, another early sixties in the Burghauser ranks attracted attention: Felix Bachschmid missed the equalizer by a hair’s head (30th). Until the break, the sunset over the Wacker fan curve was the most worth seeing.

After the break, the hosts sniffed the equalizer in front of the 4,100 spectators: Bachschmid came uncovered to the header, but was not able to cause 1860 keeper Tom Kretzschmar any trouble (50th). And then the lions cheered again: Stefan Lex overtook the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 after a through pass from Neudecker. The attacker hadn’t scored in so long that he had already been nicknamed Load Jamming Lex, so he and his teammates cheered his goal accordingly (55th).
However, anyone who thought that this was the decision in favor of the third division team at the regional division had not expected the third lion shock of the day: Burghausen actually came with a double strike from his two goalscorers Christoph Maier (64th) and Robin Ungerath (68th) for a 2: 2 equalization. Maier hit after a long stroke unmolested by the sixty defense, Ungerath with a dream shot from 22 meters. And then Kretzschmar had to prevent the third Wacker hit against Leipold (76th). Shortly before the end, the Löwen received a free kick in a promising position, but Schöller parried against Neudecker.
So, as usual in the Toto Cup, the penalty shoot-out went without extra time. The only shooter who forgave was Burghausen’s Leipold – the decisive attempt was turned by Bär. For the lions it was the successful end of a crazy day. How things will go on with the Corona case should be clarified this Thursday. “Tomorrow, together with the authorities, a decision will be taken on how to proceed, also with regard to the tasks in the league,” said TSV 1860.
