Shipwreck: The Adella Shores was considered cursed – and sank three times

Watch the video: The “Adella Shores” was considered cursed since its christening – and sank three times.

This shipwreck lay undiscovered at the bottom of Lake Superior in the USA for 111 years until it was discovered by historians in the summer of 2021. The Adella Shores was probably considered cursed by sailors when she was baptized. The reason: According to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, the family that owned the wooden steamer at the time consisted of strict anti-alcoholics, so in 1894 the ship was christened with a bottle of water instead of a bottle of champagne or wine. Not a good omen, the Adella Shores, which is named after the owner’s daughter Adella, sinks a total of three times. The Shores Lumber Company boat was made fit again twice before finally, on April 29, 1909, loaded with a load of salt on its way to Duluth, it was surprised by a violent northeast storm in the frozen lake and sank. The ship and its 14 crew members were presumed lost for 111 years.

In the summer of 2021, Darryl Ertel, director of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society, and his brother Dan find the wreck of the Adella Shores on the bottom of the lake at great depths. “I knew immediately that it had to be the Adella Shores when I measured its length because there were no other ships missing in this size range,” said Ertel. Now the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is making its find public.
