When the man was back in his hometown of Vienna in 1956, for the first time after years of persecution and expulsion, he drove to the apartment where he had lived with his family until 1938. He rang the bell and a strange woman answered. She turned pale and cried: “The Jew is back!” Just before she slammed the door in the man’s face, he was able to take a look at the furniture in the apartment. They came from his parents and their former Jewish neighbors.
