Shakira Receives the Video Vanguard Award for Lifetime Achievement at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Special honor for Shakira (46): The singer is at the MTV Video Music Awards 2023 awarded the Video Vanguard Award. This prize honors artists who have made a special contribution to the music video art form. Also known as the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the award honors an artist’s lifetime achievement.

“Shakira is a true global force, inspiring and influencing the masses with her unique musicianship,” explains Bruce Gilmer, President of Music for Paramount, which owns MTV. “She is a trailblazer for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music,” continued Gilmer.

Shakira takes the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards for the first time in 17 years

The ceremony will take place on September 12, 2023 (in this country on the night of September 13) at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. Shakira will also perform at the gala for the first time in 17 years. The Colombian performs a medley of her greatest hits. Shakira is also nominated for regular awards. She’s in the running four times: among other things, as artist of the year and for the best collaboration for the song “TQG” with compatriot Karol G (32).

That means the Video Vanguard Award

The Video Vanguard Award has been presented since 1984, when the MTV Video Music Awards were first presented. In the first year, The Beatles, who are regarded as co-inventors of the art form music video, were retrospectively awarded.

In 1991, the award was renamed the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Michael Jackson (1958-2009) set new standards, especially for his video for “Thriller”. In 2019, there were debates about the name due to the abuse allegations against Jackson that became known through the documentary “Leaving Neverland”. But MTV continues to refer to the award in official documents by the name that has been in use since 1991. Traditionally, however, Michael Jackson is not mentioned by name during the award ceremony.
