First came the heat, then the thunderstorm: Yesterday was the hottest this year. Storms followed, especially in southern Germany – but they hardly caused any damage.

After the high temperatures, strong thunderstorms erupted, especially in parts of southern Germany. Heavy rain and gusty winds were reported from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. In Ilsfeld (Heilbronn district), lightning struck a barn with straw bales.

Previously, high temperatures were measured across Germany on Saturday. The German Weather Service (DWD) registered the highest temperatures of the year for Germany so far yesterday with 38.8 degrees Celsius in Bavaria. The value was measured in Möhrendorf-Kleinseebach in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district at around 3:20 p.m., a DWD meteorologist said on the basis of preliminary data in the evening of the German Press Agency. In Kitzingen, which is also in northern Bavaria, it was 37.8 degrees, in Dresden-Strehlen in Saxony 37.3 degrees. Other very high values ​​were also reported in Baden-Württemberg. Notzingen (Esslingen district) recorded 37.3 degrees, Stuttgart-Echterdingen 37.0 degrees.

Even in Rostock-Warnemünde, directly on the Baltic Sea beach, it was still 33.1 degrees, said the DWD expert. Temperatures of more than 30 degrees were measured throughout the east of the republic as well as in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. In contrast, it was not quite as hot in north-west Germany.

The previous record for this year was held last Sunday with 38.0 degrees in Waghäusel-Kirrlach (Karlsruhe district) in Baden-Württemberg. The German temperature record is still a long way from all these values. According to the DWD, 41.2 degrees Celsius were measured on July 25, 2019 at the stations in Duisburg and Tönisvorst. Last year, for example, 40.1 degrees were recorded on July 20 in Hamburg-Neuwiedenthal.
