Severe weather ensures numerous missions in Lower Bavaria


A storm front passed over Lower Bavaria on Saturday evening (August 7th) and caused numerous fire and police operations. As a spokesman for the Lower Bavaria police announced, thunderstorms, squalls and rain raged particularly hard in the city and in the district of Passau and in Simbach am Inn.

Fire brigades in constant use

Between 7 and 8 p.m. alone, the police received more than 100 emergency calls. According to a spokesman for the Integrated Control Center in Passau, the fire brigade was deployed to around 190 missions. Most of the time, the emergency services had to deal with full cellars and bent trees that had fallen onto the roadway.

Fallen tree blocks railway line

A tree blocked the Munich – Simbach railway line, which is why the tracks had to be temporarily closed. In addition, 13 parked cars were damaged by fallen trees, most of them in Passau and Simbach am Inn. In Winzer (district of Deggendorf) a fallen tree damaged three cars.

Injured people in accidents caused by storms

There were also several severe weather-related car accidents, according to the police spokesman. Two people were slightly injured. In one case, aquaplaning was said to be the cause of the accident. In Passau, a driver broke his wrist when he crashed his car into a fallen tree. On a county road near Kirchdorf am Inn, a tree fell on a moving car. The driver was able to jump out of the car in time, she was uninjured.

Lightning strike near residential area

Lightning struck a tree near Zeilarn in the Rottal-Inn district. As a result, there was heavy smoke development near a housing estate. The tree burned down completely. Nobody got hurt. The storm front had crossed Lower Bavaria from around 7 p.m. and then moved on towards Upper Austria.
