Seven people arrested after clashes between gendarmes and demonstrators

Guadeloupe is still in the grip of a social rebellion punctuated by violence. In all, seven people were arrested Monday morning after clashes between gendarmes and demonstrators on a reinstalled roadblock. “Two people were arrested” following clashes in which “three gendarmes were slightly injured by throwing stones”, we learned from the gendarmerie.

The gendarmes were trying to intervene on a dam reinstalled in Rivière des Pères, in Basse-Terre, and wiped “projectiles” for “several hours”, according to this source. The police had to use tear gas canisters before being able to free the access, in the middle of the morning. The two people were arrested for “obstruction and violence against people holding public authority”, according to the same source.

Sentenced to 15 months in prison, 6 of which were closed

Another attempt to reestablish roadblocks was prevented on the Kassaverie roundabout, the prefecture said in its assessment of the night, adding that five people had been arrested, including “an individual carrying an automatic pistol”. A man who had been arrested during the weekend in possession of a firearm stolen from an armory in Baie-Mahault during the looting at the start of the social crisis, was sentenced on Monday for “concealment” at 15 months in prison including six firm months, said Patrick Desjardins, public prosecutor of Pointe-à-Pitre.

Traffic is also almost back to normal in Guadeloupe on Monday, except on certain roads where roadblocks are maintained, such as that of La Boucan in Sainte-Rose or that of Perrin in Abymes.
