Seven dead in clashes between soldiers and demonstrators in the south of the country

Seven people were killed on Thursday in Ayacucho, southern Peru, during clashes between soldiers and supporters of deposed President Pablo Castillo, according to regional health authorities.

These clashes took place “in various points of the city”, according to the Regional Health Directorate. A clash near Ayacucho airport notably killed two people, according to the Peruvian Ombudsman.

The ex-president remains in prison

Peru’s ex-president Pedro Castillo, under investigation for “rebellion” after his failed attempt to dissolve parliament, will remain in pre-trial detention for 18 months, the country’s Supreme Court announced on Thursday.

The Court granted the prosecution, which invoked a “risk of absconding” to request the continued detention of Castillo. The latter had tried to take refuge in the Mexican embassy in Lima after his dismissal on December 7.
