In the USA, a Trump-era measure comes into force again on a court order: migrants coming from Mexico have to wait there for a hearing. President Biden really wanted that to end.
Setback for US President Joe Biden’s migration policy: As promised in the election campaign, he suspended the restrictive measures introduced by his predecessor Donald Trump on the border with Mexico, but now has to reinstate them. People seeking asylum in the US will have to wait again in Mexico for hearings in US immigration courts starting next week.
Agreement with Mexico is a prerequisite
The reason is an order from the Texas district judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, who was still appointed by Trump. The upheld a lawsuit by the US states of Texas and Missouri and decided that the measure must be reintroduced – subject to Mexico’s approval. This is now apparently available. As US officials announced, some additions and changes that Mexico had requested will be implemented: For example, it is planned that all migrants affected by the directive will be vaccinated against Covid-19.
The number of illegal border crossings into the United States had fallen sharply after Mexico agreed to the rapid expansion of the so-called “Remain in Mexico” practice in the face of Trump threats with higher tariffs in 2019. While they were waiting in Mexico, asylum seekers were often victims of violence and had no legal assistance. The Democrat Biden had therefore promised to lift the restrictive regulation in a legally secure manner.
