Germany’s first crypto stamp features the Brandenburg Gate in pixel style. The motif was generated by artificial intelligence and is the start of a new series.

Germany has its first crypto stamp. Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) and Post-Germany boss Nikola Hagleitner presented the brand on Thursday in Berlin. “With all the exciting, entertaining tasks you have as finance minister, this is the best job,” said Lindner. The new postage stamp builds a bridge from analog to digital.

From November 2nd there will be 250,000 booklets, each containing a stamp for a large letter costing 1.60 euros and a non-fungible token (NFT). This is a digital code on the blockchain that is unique and acts as a certificate of ownership for one of the 250,000 crypto stamps. The blockchain is a distributed, openly visible database that does not require a central authority and is used, for example, for crypto currencies such as Bitcoin.

“I’m a big supporter of digitalization,” said Lindner, adding: “Those who rely on digital can now stick the digital on the outside.”

The first crypto tokens cost 99 euros

The first hundred crypto stamps including NFT cost 99 euros, the remaining 9.90 euros. In addition to the stamps with NFTs, there are 800,000 completely normal editions of the postage stamp, i.e. without a code. The brand is issued by the Federal Ministry of Finance and the post office is responsible for distribution.

The motif shown is the Brandenburg Gate, as depicted by artificial intelligence. It is the start of a new series called “Historical Buildings,” which can be collected both physically and digitally.

In addition, as is now common practice, a matrix code is printed which prevents the multiple use of stamps and enables tracing. Germany is not a pioneer when it comes to crypto stamps; states such as Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein already have such a postage stamp with a digital code.
