Service proceedings against prison employees after a prisoner escapes – Bavaria

After a prisoner escaped in Augsburg, disciplinary proceedings were initiated against an employee of the correctional facility (JVA). According to the Ministry of Justice in Munich, there is a suspicion that the employee did not adequately monitor the pre-trial detainee during treatment in a hospital. The prison employee originally explained that the 47-year-old prisoner had taken advantage of a brief moment of inattention to escape. At first they had Augsburger Allgemeine reported on the disciplinary proceedings on Thursday.

The 47-year-old had only been imprisoned in the Augsburg-Gablingen prison for a few days. The prison is considered one of the most modern and safest in Germany. On Monday last week, the prisoner, who was being held on suspicion of theft and fraud, was taken to the Augsburg district hospital for treatment, from where he was able to escape on foot. Two days later he was arrested in an Augsburg apartment following a tip from a witness.

As a ministry employee explained, the proceedings against the prison employee will now probably be conducted by the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office. “According to current knowledge, there is no evidence of possible accomplices or escape aides or that the escape from the hospital was planned,” she said.
