A powerful black cube is at the center of this science fiction series, as menacing and dark as the black monolith in “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Unlike Stanley Kubrick, however, this cube does not come from the depths of an unknown galaxy, but is man-made, constructed by top scientists in Chicago. It is a vehicle with which one can travel to other times and other versions of reality; this conglomerate is now called a multiverse. The books and films about it play out the paradox of Schrödinger’s cat, which radically questions the status of reality in quantum theory. It is precisely this paradox that physics professor Jason Dessen attempts in Dark Matter – The Runner of Time initially presented to his rather bored students in a lecture.
