The mayor of Saubens, Jean-Marc Bergia, says he is “satisfied” to turn “a painful page in his life as a city councilor” on this court decision. The two men who molested him on July 28, 2019 have just been sentenced by the Toulouse Court of Appeal much more heavily than at first instance.

One was sentenced to one year in prison, the other 10 months in prison, three of which were suspended. While the first sentence was a 9-month suspended sentence and a 1,000 euros fine for the two attackers.

A week before the death of the mayor of Signes

At the time of the events, the mayor, warned of the arrival of travelers on flood-prone land in his town, had tried on his own to block access to the plot. He had been thrown to the ground several times, injured, then immobilized, the confiscation of his phone preventing him from calling the emergency services.

The case had a strong retroactive impact when, a week later, the mayor of Signes (Var) had lost his life in the performance of his duties, deliberately struck by a van.
