Sensational return? Lothar Matthäus speaks plainly

FC Bayern and Thomas Tuchel have agreed to end their collaboration in the summer. But what if the Munich team decides to change coach early? Lothar Matthäus rules out a “firefighter” commitment on Säbener Straße and names another candidate instead.

He was “absolutely not” available, Matthäus made it clear on Sunday evening on “Sky”. Instead, the record-breaking international named another name that is well known at FC Bayern.

“I could imagine Hermann Gerland, who is popular everywhere at Bayern and is a big name not only among the players, but also in the surrounding area. He should bring the team together, as a unit. They can play football. If all eleven play that As a team, what they can do, then they are one of the favorites to win the Champions League,” said Matthäus.

Gerland worked at FC Bayern for around three decades with occasional interruptions – in various functions. The 69-year-old is currently working as assistant to coach Antonio Di Salvo for the German U21 national team.

Daum supports Matthäus’ “giant proposal”

“He is someone who can take hold of the team, who motivates the team, who gives the players the self-confidence they need to perform. You need someone who can bring calm now,” praised Matthäus of the “Tiger”.

Christoph Daum agreed with the 62-year-old’s idea. “I think Hermann Gerland is a huge suggestion. He has all the qualities that a Bayern coach needs. He brings everything with him,” he said.

FC Bayern plans to end the season with Tuchel. Recently, however, speculation arose that an early exit from the Champions League could change this. The Bundesliga club goes into the second leg of the round of 16 against Lazio on Tuesday evening (9 p.m.) with a 0-1 scoreline.
