If there were a ranking of Munich’s districts and their social facilities, Sendling-Westpark would probably be at the end of this scale. But after various initiatives by the city’s social department and the municipal housing company GWG, things could change for the better, at least in the medium term.
The GWG is planning a new building on the west side of Garmischer Straße, between Preßburger and Krüner Straße. Sendling-Westpark would then finally have a family center, an educational center, school lunchtime care and “other, low-threshold support offers, especially for families in socially disadvantaged situations.”
The social department has confirmed to the Sendling-Westpark district committee that there is a corresponding need. “From a technical point of view” we recommend the creation of the above-mentioned institutions, social officer Dorothee Schiwy recently told BA chairman Günter Keller (both SPD). The city youth welfare office will encourage the city council to make a corresponding fundamental decision in order to be able to initiate further planning. This includes financing and the choice of provider.
However, Social Affairs Officer Schiwy dampens premature hopes by pointing out that the actual “installation” of the new offers depends “in particular on the city’s budget situation.” There is currently little cause for euphoria. The Sendling-Westpark district committee nevertheless assumes that at least the GWG new building plans will be pushed forward independently. And that the resulting areas “can also be used for social purposes”.
In order to satisfy the “urgent need for space” for after-school care and lunchtime care at the Fernpassschule, local politicians are hoping for the offices of the current GWG property management with a total area of 450 square meters. The property management will be moving from Fernpaßstrasse to the planned new buildings on Garmischer Strasse in the foreseeable future. According to a request from the district committee, it should now be quickly clarified whether the desired solution could be implemented.
During a conversation between members of the district council and the GWG, the representatives of the housing company explained that they had “made a needs inquiry” to the social services department. In order to submit a preliminary decision, further details must now be determined, such as the exact space required. Günter Keller doesn’t need to be told twice: “We’ll stick with it.”
