Semifinals and finals of the viola at the ARD music competition. – Munich

After the semifinals in the viola subject at the 72nd ARD International Music Competition, everything was still open at the music college on Friday. Because the three finalists who were finally chosen could not have been more different: Here the only 23-year-old South Korean Haesue Lee, who played Franz Anton Hoffmeister’s Concerto in D major for viola and orchestra with a (too) rich tone, but flawlessly beautiful. There with the same concerto by the Japanese Takehiro Konoe, who played every phrase of this concerto composed around 1800 in a wonderfully fulfilled manner, without ever boasting, and chose short cadenzas that stylistically perfectly fitted into the composition.
