“Three of the four protesters were escorted from the stadium without incident. The fourth protester pinned his bare feet to the ground. Therefore, the NYPD (New York Police Department, CoR) and medical personnel are needed to safely remove the person from the stadium,” the tournament organizer said in a statement.
The four people were initially taken into custody by the NYPD.
According to the organizer, a total of 49 minutes passed before the match could be resumed.
Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova retreated into the catacombs of Arthur Ashe Stadium during the events.
“The crazy thing is I said to myself this morning, ‘I bet there will be a climate change protest in the finale.’ I didn’t think it would be in the semi-finals,” Gauff told ESPN.
She “immediately told the referee that it was a protest. Karolina asked me how I knew it was a protest. I replied: ‘I don’t know. Something told me that this morning,'” she said -year olds.
