Seeg im Allgäu: Mayor is said to have embezzled millions – Bavaria

Michael Berktold (CSU) is said to have cheated the nursing care fund and stole two million euros from the local Caritas association. The public prosecutor’s office in Nuremberg is now filing charges – the mayor is in custody but wants to remain in office.

Michael Berktold has been in custody since January, and the public prosecutor’s office has now brought charges against the mayor of Seeg in the Allgäu. The investigators accuse the CSU politician, who is still in office today, of commercial fraud and breach of trust. The Bavarian central office for combating fraud and corruption in the health care system at the public prosecutor’s office in Nuremberg holds Berktold against an intended loss of 2.1 million euros for the long-term care insurance fund. He is also said to have embezzled a good two million euros. As mayor, Berktold created a network of companies from several companies he controlled with the aim of supplying his companies with fresh capital, even using unfair means. The accused has not yet commented on the allegation.
