Sebastian Hoeneß is no longer Hoffenheim coach – football

Coach Sebastian Hoeneß and TSG Hoffenheim are now going their separate ways. The club confirmed this on Tuesday. Hoeneß has been head coach in the Kraichgau since the 2020/21 season.

Sebastian Hoeneß is no longer the coach of TSG Hoffenheim. In a press statement, the club’s management thanked him for his work: “We have always clearly expressed our appreciation for the coach and person Sebastian Hoeneß over the past few months. That’s another reason why the decision was not easy for us,” said TSG Director Professional Football, Alexander Rosen.

Rosen explains the breakup

“But after an analysis that started before the last matchday, we have to admit that the results and events of the past two months have overshadowed many of the many positive aspects that this season had in store and that have meanwhile brought us fourth place,” explains to Rosen the reason for the breakup.

Season goal clearly missed

Hoeneß took over as head coach ahead of the 2020/21 season, succeeding Alfred Schreuder. In his first season he finished eleventh with TSG. The Kraichgauer did not reach the European Cup goal in the past season. Hoeneß and Hoffenheim missed qualifying for international business by six points. The Kraichgauers gambled away the entry into the European Cup with the last nine games without a win and ended the season in ninth place. In the last three games, TSG suffered three defeats with a total of 13 goals conceded.

Hoffenheim

Sebastian Hoeneß’s time at TSG Hoffenheim came to an early end. The club parted ways with their head coach on Tuesday. SWR football reporter Kersten Eichhorn has a clear opinion on this.

After Adi Hütter (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Markus Weinzierl (FC Augsburg) and Florian Kohfeldt (VfL Wolfsburg), Hoeneß is the fourth coach to leave or have to leave at the end of the season. The dismissal of Hoeneß, whose contract actually ran until June 2023, came as a surprise despite the recent downturn.

At the end of April, Rosen had explained that Hoeneß was firmly in the saddle at the club of majority owner Dietmar Hopp. “No – and I seriously wonder how you came up with this thesis in the first place,” Rosen had answered in the “kicker” when asked whether there were any remaining doubts about Hoeneß.

“Sebastian is a cool, honest guy, not a foam hitter, a strong communicator and an absolute football expert,” said Rosen about the coach: “We work together very trustingly and have common goals.” Most recently, Rosen, like Hoeneß, had repeatedly cited injury problems and weak defenses as the reason for the disappointing performance.
