Search for former RAF members – special forces in action on A5

After the arrest of former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette, investigators are continuing to search for two other former members of the group. Now there was another police operation.

There was another police operation on Monday in connection with the search for two former RAF members. Special forces were involved in the operation on Autobahn 5 south of Darmstadt, among others, as a spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office announced. There were no arrests or detentions. A camper was towed away. The spokeswoman did not initially provide any details about the vehicle.

Last Monday, former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette was arrested in Berlin. The 65-year-old went into hiding over 30 years ago, like the two other RAF members Ernst-Volker Staub (69) and Burkhard Garweg (55). Since Klette’s arrest, there have been several police operations to arrest the two men. The investigators now assume that they are close on Garweg’s heels.

Arrest warrants against RAF members

All three belonged to the so-called third generation of the left-wing extremist terrorist organization Red Army Faction. The RAF was the epitome of terror and murder in Germany for decades. In 1998 it declared itself dissolved. During the active terror period of the third generation, the then Deutsche Bank boss Alfred Herrhausen (1989) and Treuhand boss Detlev Karsten Rohwedder (1991) were murdered.

There are arrest warrants against Klette, Staub and Garweg on suspicion of involvement in terrorist attacks. They were or are also wanted for several robberies. Between 1999 and 2016 they are said to have robbed money transporters and supermarkets in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. They are also accused of attempted murder because there was a shooting.
