After the disappearance of an 83-year-old, a large-scale search operation has been underway in Bad Gandersheim, Lower Saxony, since yesterday. Now, thanks to the latest technology, he has been tracked down.

The fire brigade in the Lower Saxony district of Northeim found a helpless 83-year-old with dementia with the help of a drone with a thermal imaging camera.

The 83-year-old left a care facility in Bad Gandersheim on Friday afternoon and an employee at the facility reported him missing, the police said on Saturday. A search in the vicinity was initially unsuccessful. In cooperation with numerous firefighters, an extensive rescue operation then took place.

In the meantime, the missing person had contacted a relative via video call, the police said. He told the police that the senior was lying in front of a garden fence. Thanks to the drone with a thermal imaging function, the 83-year-old was found in a helpless position in the evening, but safe.
