Gschies
Here a war is raging, there the forests are burning, the world is once again out of control. The professional football industry alone remains largely unaffected by suffering and misery. The fact that Briton Harry Kane is moving to Bayern Munich was the most important news in the world for days, at least in Germany. “What a mess they have to do to the footballer,” murmured a pensioner on a bench in the beautiful Vilstal valley as he discussed the course of events with a few friends there. After all, the fuss about football fulfills the purpose of distracting some people from their worries. Bread and circuses were already considered by the ancient Romans to be a tried and tested recipe against any form of world chagrin.
On the other hand, the word Gschies expresses the fact that the football business fuels excess and flying and, with its global fanfare, contributes in no time to saving the earth. Oddly enough, that doesn’t even bother the climate stickers, who otherwise always make a huge mess. Irrespective of this, the word Gschies (shit) has different facets, it expresses both unpleasant and annoying. It is questionable whether the back side of a house, i.e. the front, has something to do with it. The definition of the recently deceased cabaret artist Maria Peschek sounds convincing. She said: “If a Gschies is made about someone, then he must be important.” The television character Monaco Franze, from whom probably the most popular quote comes, thinks quite differently: “Always des Gschies with Elli!”
Baaz
On these hot days, the body produces liters of sweat. Many a construction worker complains: “I lafft da Baaz owa!” That means: I’m sweating. Baaz is used as a synonym for sweat when the liquid mixes with the dirt on the body. Actually, the Baaz, pronounced with a bright a, is a greasy mass of earth. The figurative dialect not only equates the sweat with the baaz, but also with the soss (sauce). If you run down the sauce, it expresses more of the sour smell of sweat.
