A little streaming abroad and a few thousand euros are gone – the Scottish Health Minister also had this experience. The horrendous cell phone bill now cost him his job.

Scotland’s Health Secretary Michael Matheson resigns over a horrendous roaming bill for his work tablet. During a vacation in Morocco, around 11,000 pounds (around 12,900 euros) were collected in fees. According to the politician, his sons had used the device as a hotspot to watch football. An investigation was then announced in Parliament.

Resignation due to horrendous cell phone bill

On Thursday, Matheson announced his resignation. He has not yet received the results of the review. However, it is in both his interest and the government’s interest that he resign now so that the case does not distract from further government work, the Scottish National Party MP said on the X platform (formerly Twitter).

Matheson was criticized for his handling of the case. He initially denied that he had used the work device privately, as the British news agency PA reported. He later admitted that his children had used the SIM card. Matheson served in various government positions for nearly 13 years.

Scotland’s Prime Minister Humza Yousaf wrote that he accepted his resignation with regret. But it is best for Matheson to step down now. He did his country a great service with his work in government. “I wish you and your family the very best,” Yousaf wrote, according to the government.
