Scotland: Ex-Prime Minister Sturgeon arrested – Politics

It is said to be about the finances of the Scottish National Party: Police suspect that more than £600,000 donated to the independence campaign has been used for other purposes.

Former Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon has been arrested. A 52-year-old woman is in custody and is being interrogated, said the police. A spokesman for Sturgeon told the BBC she was cooperating with the investigation. The case appears to be linked to the Scottish National Party (SNP) finance investigation, of which Sturgeon was until recently leader.

Police Scotland are investigating loudly Guardians Allegations that more than £600,000 (more than €700,000) donated to the Scottish independence campaign has been used for other causes. In connection with this, Sturgeon’s husband was briefly arrested and questioned in early April.

Nicola Sturgeon surprisingly announced her resignation as Prime Minister and SNP Chair in February. She referred above all to the physical and psychological stresses that she experienced as head of government. During the corona pandemic in particular, she increasingly lost the energy she needed for the job. The 52-year-old became the first woman to take office as First Minister in November 2014. She was the longest-serving Scottish Prime Minister.

Sturgeon’s successor at the helm of the party and government has been Humza Yousaf since late March. Like his predecessor, he wants to lead Scotland to independence. The British government in London and the Supreme Court have so far rejected the SNP’s request to let the Scots decide again in a referendum on secession from the United Kingdom.
