The sentence of eight years and three months in prison against a mother after the death of her baby is not yet final. The mother has appealed, as a court spokesman for the Schweinfurt regional court said on Thursday. The 27-year-old was convicted of manslaughter on August 5. The jury found it proven that the woman did not care for the newborn after the birth in her apartment in Schweinfurt and let it die. According to the chamber, the woman had kept the pregnancy a secret so as not to accept economic and personal restrictions from having a second child.
In his plea in favor of manslaughter in a less serious case, the defense attorney had considered a suspended sentence to be possible. The prosecutor had pleaded for a prison sentence of seven and a half years for manslaughter. Originally, the woman was charged with murder. Neither the court nor the prosecutor found any evidence of murder confirmed.
