Schwabing: Tram out of service for months – Munich

Schwabing residents and commuters in the north of Munich have to be prepared for traffic jams and restrictions on local public transport in autumn. The Munich transport company (MVG) is renewing and improving its rail network, which affects tram lines 12, 23, 27 and 28 – with three to four-month route closures.

Line 23, which runs from Münchner Freiheit along Leopoldstrasse and Ungererstrasse to Frankfurter Ring, has been completely closed for 14 weeks since September. The reason for this is the construction of a new route: MVG is planning to offer tram 12, which has so far ended at Scheidplatz, as an additional connection to Parkstadt Schwabing. However, this requires infrastructural changes at Scheidplatz, including upgrading the Scheidplatz-Süd stop on Parzivalstraße, retrofitting track curves and redesigning the street space. Tram lines 12 and 28 are also involved in the measure: from October to December they do not run between Scheidplatz and Kurfürstenplatz for ten weeks.

After the Wiesn, from October 9th, passengers can expect further restrictions. Because more than 1500 meters of outdated tracks have to be replaced due to age at Scheidplatz, Kurfürstenplatz, in the area of the Pinakotheken and in Nordendstrasse, operations on these routes will also be suspended for nine weeks. Therefore, neither tram 23 nor trams 27 and 28 can be used until December 10th. Only tram 12 will be diverted at Nordbad in the direction of Petuelring.

The construction sites also affect car traffic. The Nordendstraße is not passable at all during the track construction work, the diversion takes place via the Schellingstraße. In the section between Karolinenstrasse and Theresienstrasse, Barer Strasse becomes a one-way street heading north. And the vehicles are also guided past Kurfürstenplatz. All traffic will only remain open at Scheidplatz, although there some will have one lane instead of two lanes. Parzivalstrasse will also become a one-way street up to Kölner Platz – only accessible from the south.
