Rain chaos in Monaco: Sergio Perez in the Red Bull secured victory ahead of Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari. World champion Max Verstappen finished third ahead of pole setter Charles Lecler. Mick Schumacher split his car in two.

Mick Schumacher had a serious accident in the rain chaos at the Monaco Grand Prix, but survived it uninjured. The Haas racing car of the 23-year-old German Formula 1 driver was torn in two when the crash hit the crash barriers on the narrow course on Sunday. Schumacher was able to leave the destroyed car under his own power. The rear was severed from the rest of the car.

He had lost control of the car on the drying course, spun and then hit the side violently. It was the second serious accident of the son of record champion Michael Schumacher this season, in Saudi Arabia he had an accident in qualifying. The race in Monaco had to be interrupted after Mick Schumacher’s crash to clean the track.

Max Verstappen defends championship lead

After that, Sergio Perez defended his lead in the Red Bull and cried out his joy with a loud “Vaaamooos” while still in the cockpit. Charles Leclerc, who was bitterly disappointed again in his Formula 1 home race, simply could not believe it and etched against Ferrari. “Without words, without words,” stammered the Monegasque to himself after fourth place. Angry at his team: “We can’t do that. It’s horrible.”

In a sometimes chaotic race after heavy rain at the beginning, Leclerc finished the classic for the first time. After an incredible glitch in the Scuderia’s strategy department, however, he did not make it onto the winner’s podium in the royal box. Second place for Carlos Sainz in the second red racing car in front of Perez’ teammate and world champion Max Verstappen was no consolation either. “It hurts,” said Leclerc.

Sebastian Vettel was enough in the Aston Martin as tenth for at least one point. Record champion Lewis Hamilton finished eighth in the Mercedes at the Monaco Grand Prix.
