Schools – extensive renovation – Munich district

New school concepts sometimes require major renovations. With the reintroduction of the G 9 with 13 school years up to the Abitur, more classrooms will be necessary. That is one reason why the north wing on the Graefelfingen school campus is to be completely converted for the Kurt Huber grammar school. The school is already using the building and occupies six classrooms. After the renovation, i.e. at the beginning of the school year 2025/26, there will then be a total of twelve classrooms and a new cafeteria. The building committee has now approved the renovation.

A feasibility study already showed in 2019 what can become of the north wing in need of renovation. The architects’ office Schmidt-Schicketanz Planer GmbH has now presented a plan that requires investments of twelve million euros, 70 percent of which is borne by the district. The core is the reorganization of the rooms. In addition to the classrooms, the corridors have learning islands: the niches are intended to loosen up the long corridors, but also to enable group work. The entire building will be converted to make it barrier-free, and an elevator will in future lead to the upper floors. A photovoltaic system will be installed on the roof.

The north wing will also have its own cafeteria and a small school kitchen so that the students no longer have to go to the main building for lunch. At the same time, the existing school kitchen in the main building is to be expanded so that meals can be freshly prepared there. So far, the meals for the pupils from the Carl-Spitzweg-Gymnasium in Germering have been delivered to Graefelfing. A prior order is required for this. To decide spontaneously at lunchtime to eat in the cafeteria has not yet been possible, as headmistress Anita Groß said in the meeting. In addition, the rush is sometimes so great that many have no time to eat. An equalization in two cafeterias is therefore desirable, and freshly cooked food is preferable to something that has been warmed up for hours. The conversion of the school kitchen in the main building will cost 300,000 euros. The district, which is to bear the costs, still has to agree to this. The dishes delivered from the main building are to be warmed up in the kitchen in the north wing.

The renovation of the north wing is so extensive that the old building is being returned to its shell condition. The students would have to be accommodated in other classrooms during that time, said Stefan Schädle from the building authority. Work is slated to begin in 2023 and construction will last until the end of 2024.
