According to Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the evacuation of Germans and local workers who used to work for Germany is starting. Much is being done now, said Scholz in the ARD summer interview for the Report from Berlinwithout giving details. “We are on the move with all our might.” Around 2500 vulnerable people were identified. Most of them had already been brought to Germany by scheduled flight in the past few weeks.

“We are trying to speed up this process.” It’s about speed now, said Scholz. “We have to act quickly.” All things are “on the way”. Scholz rejects the acceptance of contingents of Afghan refugees in Europe, which is called for by the Greens, among others. It is more important to ensure that the refugees in neighboring countries get integration perspectives.

Scholz is confident of becoming chancellor

The SPD candidate for chancellor showed up in the ARD summer interview confident of leading the next government. “I believe we can achieve a result well over 20 percent,” he said. In Denmark and Sweden, social democrats could have formed and also led a government. “We want to achieve that too.” The chances are good. “I want to be the next chancellor.”

A clear mandate for the SPD will facilitate the formation of a government after the federal election at the end of September. Scholz did not want to comment on possible coalitions. “My goal is to lead the next government.” He was of the opinion that it would be good if the CDU and CSU could “recover in the opposition”.

The Federal Minister of Finance spoke out in favor of a minimum wage of twelve euros per hour and for “more proper collective agreements”. The minimum wage increase alone would mean a raise for ten million people.

Should he become Federal Chancellor after the Bundestag election in September, Scholz wants to put future electricity requirements into law – “in the first year”. There will be no quick exit from oil and gas. “We’ll need gas for a long time to come, that’s for sure.”
