Chancellor Scholz hopes for closer energy cooperation with the Emirates to ensure energy security in Germany. Being dependent on one supplier is no longer an option.

Chancellor Scholz continues his trip to the Gulf region. Today he will meet the heads of state of the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. His visit is primarily intended to consolidate energy partnerships and make Germany more independent of Russia. Scholz wants to further advance cooperation with the United Arab Emirates in the energy sector. A whole series of diesel and liquid gas projects have already been advanced with the Gulf State, said the Chancellor in Abu Dhabi.

He emphasized how important it is to rely on as many suppliers as possible for the energy supply. Dependence on one supplier “will certainly not happen to us again,” said Scholz. One no longer wants to be limited to a few suppliers, as in the past, “but to have a wide range of sources in order to be able to guarantee energy security in Germany”.

Advance production of LPG in the world

Referring to the expansion of gas production in the Gulf States, he added: “It is important that such projects are completed everywhere. We must ensure that the production of LNG in the world is advanced enough to meet the high demand that exists can be served without having to resort to the production capacities that exist in Russia.” This is related to all the gas projects that are going on all over the world.

Development towards a climate-neutral economy

It is about the long-term development towards a climate-neutral economy. “And that can only succeed in close cooperation with the countries that have played such a major role in the provision of fossil resources and continue to invest on a large scale in their own interest, so that they will be able to make a contribution in the world of the future for the world’s energy supply,” said Scholz.

Qatar has third largest gas reserves worldwide

Until the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Germany still obtained 55 percent of its natural gas from Russia. Deliveries from there have now largely ceased and the German gas suppliers are looking for new sources of supply.

The United Arab Emirates have the seventh largest natural gas reserves in the world. Qatar has the third largest gas reserves in the world and is a leading exporter of LNG.
