By doubling German financial aid for nature conservation in developing countries, the federal government wants to get things moving in the deadlocked final negotiations for a global agreement to protect biodiversity and ecosystems. Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday (local time) in New York that the federal government would increase its current nature conservation aid for developing countries to 1.5 billion euros per year by 2025 at the latest. On average, this corresponds to a doubling of the financial means, for example for the protection of tropical rain forests or species-rich wetlands in the southern hemisphere.
