Schleswig-Holstein – disappointed mussel harvest – economy

According to the producer association in Schleswig-Holstein, this year’s mussel harvest has so far fallen short of expectations. Although there are sufficient quantities on the soil cultures, the meat content of the mussels is lower than in previous years, said the association in Hörnum on Sylt. The meat content is a key price-determining factor. According to the information, a good 30 percent meat content is usually achieved in local breeding, but this season started with only around 25 percent. The producer association in Schleswig-Holstein attributes the lower catch this year to the relatively cold water in the months of April to June. During this time, the mussels would normally get a decisive growth spurt. The high season runs until around the end of September. According to the producers, 19.5 tons of mussels were landed in the record year of 2019. The average price was 2.02 euros. This year, the mussel fishermen are expecting a landing volume of around eleven tons, after 9.2 tons last year.
