How do you survive when critical infrastructure collapses? A private initiative gives tips – and explains why everyone should prepare for the day.

Anyone who calls the hotline has a friendly man on the line who answers in a staid tone with “Emergency Prevention Counseling Schleissheim” (NVBS). The anxious caller should feel comfortable dialing the number given all the horrible things that are happening. In the course of the conversation, it then becomes clear that nobody here wants to comfort or reassure. The two men who can be reached on the number are themselves driven by great concern: They want to make it clear that everyone can do something to better deal with crises. A crate of water in the basement and a supply of tin cans would be a first big step. But what if the failure of the water supply is accompanied by a blackout, i.e. the power supply goes to its knees? And does the population even notice when an emergency situation of any kind is imminent? Questions that arise about the nationwide test alarm this Thursday.
