Schleissheim Castle – location for avant-garde and Hollywood – district of Munich

Jean-Paul Belmondo, Kirk Douglas and Christoph Waltz have all stood in front of the camera in the castle complex of Oberschleißheim. The castle is particularly iconic in the French art film classic “Last Year in Marienbad”.

The camera pans through a high door into a ceremonial hall. A chandelier shines on the ceiling. Gold mirrors on the walls. A marble staircase. Gloomy organ sounds surround the nameless protagonist, who strides through never-ending corridors in search of a woman, as the accompanying monologue explains. This palace hotel is magnificent, and at the same time cold and lifeless, the people in it are little more than extras.
