A TV series is made to be shown on TV. A trivial statement that could be relied upon for decades. For a few years, however, series have been everywhere – on streaming portals, at festivals, in the cinema, on round discs, in media libraries. And sometimes even on TV.
There is more filming than ever before, as a viewer you have long since lost track. And even if the end of this alleged golden age of TV is prophesied more and more often, it constantly produces new episodes. Not every series can be duly acknowledged, not every miniseries finds its audience.
From a Munich point of view, however, it was a productive series year. The Bavarian state capital is a good place for series, not only because of the legendary productions by Helmut Dietl from the 1970s and 1980s. The documentary series “Schickeria – When Munich was Still Sexy”, which Amazon Prime Video published this summer, looks back to the time of “Monaco Franze” or the “Munich Stories”.
And the sexiness is exceptionally no exaggeration: Four episodes, a dozen eyewitness interviews and countless historical film snippets long and you dive into a bygone era in which world stars brought glamor to Munich, in which a pyramid was built in the middle of Schwabing and it there was an aquarium inhabited by sharks circling the dance floor of a nightclub. It would be inconceivable if this shark pool had ended in a similar way to the hotel aquarium that recently burst in Berlin.

You don’t have to shy away from the Berlin comparison in Munich, at least from a TV perspective: “Servus Baby” or “Fett und Fett” are two excellent series that capture the haphazard and precarious attitude to life of young Munich residents and will be continued in 2022 they are in the media libraries of the public broadcasters.
The thriller series “Munich Games” was created for the pay-TV provider Sky, which refers to the 1972 Olympics attack and was published on its fiftieth anniversary. But the series is set in the present: To commemorate the victims of the attack, a friendly match between an Israeli and German soccer team is to take place in Munich. But what if another attack is carried out in this game of all places?
The Munich series year 2022 was varied, and there was a lot worth seeing. As a viewer, you also have to be versatile and look around: in media libraries, in pay TV, in streaming portals. This should get better and more user friendly, you can’t subscribe for every new production. After all, all these beautiful series were made to be seen.
