The call came at an early hour, and Thomas Reis may have felt like Huub Stevens eleven years ago on Wednesday morning when the manager contacted him on a dark, approaching December day. Normally, Stevens scoffed later, Horst Heldt never started work before ten o’clock – when the phone rang he knew straight away that he would be fired. Reis also knew that he was not called to the Schalke office for breakfast together. When he sat next to his assistant Marcus Gellhaus opposite the sports director Peter Knäbel and the sports director André Hechelmann, he quickly became certain: eleven months after starting his engagement in Gelsenkirchen, he would have to leave the house again.
