At FC Schalke 04, the search for a successor to the suspended coach Frank Kramer is in full swing. On Thursday morning it initially looked like the seventh trainer of the district club would be announced within two years during the day. After Kramer’s leave of absence on Wednesday, the Bundesliga penultimate moved the non-public training session on Thursday from morning to afternoon. On Sunday, the royal blues have to play at Hertha BSC after the severe cup defeat at TSG Hoffenheim (1: 5) and five competitive bankruptcies in a row. The district club confirmed in the afternoon that the previous assistant Matthias Kreutzer will be on the sidelines.

According to reports, a new head coach will only be presented afterwards. “The coaching team, led by Matthias Kreutzer, will prepare the team as best as possible for the important game in Berlin in the short time available. In the interest of the club, we will carefully examine all the options that we have, including in the short term, when making a decision about filling the position of head coach. This is our responsibility to the 165,000 members and millions of fans,” the accompanying message said.

The athletic management of #S04 decided in consultation with the entire board that Matthias Kreutzer will look after the team as interim coach for the away game against Hertha BSC on Sunday.

The favorite for a long time was Thomas Reis, who was on leave from VfL Bochum a month ago but is still under contract there. The 49-year-old was supposed to switch from VfL to Schalke in the summer. The 44-year-old Austrian has been with SK Sturm Graz since July 2020 and has scored an average of 1.77 points in 101 games since then. Ilzer is under contract in Graz until 2024.

So far, S04 have collected six points from ten Bundesliga matchdays – since 2011/12 the club had only started weaker in the relegation season.
