Scandal over his brother: CNN dismisses star presenter Cuomo

First suspended, now dismissed: The US broadcaster CNN is separating from its star presenter Cuomo. According to investigations, he helped dismiss allegations of sexual harassment against his brother.

The US television broadcaster CNN has sacked its presenter Chris Cuomo for supporting his brother Andrew, who resigned as governor of New York in a sexual misconduct scandal. CNN boss Jeff Zucker announced this in an email to the workforce.

CNN followed a recommendation from a law firm hired to investigate information leaked this week about the moderator’s support for his brother.

Cuomo involved “to a greater extent”

Internal investigations have revealed that Cuomo was involved “to a greater extent” in his brother’s defense than was previously known, the broadcaster said. A few days earlier, CNN had already suspended the moderator from duty.

The New York attorney general released previously undisclosed details on Tuesday how the star presenter supported his brother Andrew Cuomo with strategic planning and media contacts to deny the allegations.

Cuomo is accused by several women of sexually molesting her. He refused, but resigned in August under enormous public pressure.

Contradictory statements

According to the transcripts released by the Attorney General’s Office, Chris Cuomo contacted other journalists to find out what they knew about his brother’s suspects. That seemed to contradict his public statement on CNN after Andrew Cuomo’s resignation: “I never made calls to the press about my brother’s situation.”

Cuomo at the peak of success

On his release, Chris Cuomo stated on Twitter: “This is not how I wanted to end my time on CNN, but I’ve already said why and how I helped my brother.”

Chris Cuomo hosted CNN’s most successful newscast of the year, “Cuomo Prime Time”. Up until a year ago, he and his brother, who was initially highly praised for his management of the corona pandemic, were at the peak of their success.
