Julian Schuster becomes Streich’s successor at SC Freiburg

SC Freiburg has already found a successor two days after its long-time coach Christian Streich announced his resignation. Julian Schuster will take over the team from summer. The ex-professional has been developed internally for years.
EAccording to consistent media reports, x-professional Julian Schuster will be the new coach of SC Freiburg. The 38-year-old will be Christian Streich’s successor at the Baden Bundesliga club for the new season, “Bild” and “Kicker” reported on Wednesday.
Following his active football career in 2018, Schuster stayed with the Breisgauers after ten years in the SC jersey and pursued a career as a coach. He completed the last DFB coaching course in 2023 with the pro license as a football teacher. Most recently, he worked at SC Freiburg as an assistant coach and so-called liaison coach, who acted as an interface between the youth and professional areas. He knows the processes within the club and is highly valued. However, Schuster has no experience as a head coach.
Former striker Nils Petersen had already praised Schuster highly on Tuesday. “Even as a player, Julian Schuster was the longest extension of a coach I have ever seen,” said the 35-year-old, who played with Schuster for Freiburg.

“It was crystal clear to me that Schusti would one day become a coach, and I would be very surprised if this great personality wasn’t successful,” said Petersen: “His speeches on match days always had something incredibly clear, motivating and always meaningful. When he spoke, there was silence in the dressing room.”
On Monday Streich (58) announced that he would not extend his contract with SC Freiburg and would quit at the end of the season. “After twelve years of Christian Streich, there is no need for a bad copy to appear in front of the team that arrives by bike and speaks Alemannic,” said Petersen: “If you want to see something good in this turning point, then it might be a new face, a new input, a new approach, perhaps even a different idea of football. In the end, you need sporting success, authenticity, and of course it doesn’t hurt to be a people-catcher in your own way.” You shouldn’t force the new coach “into a twelve-year-old template in his style, in his nature, in his thinking.” said Petersen.
