Eintracht Frankfurt almost landed a transfer coup on Deadline Day.

Eintracht Frankfurt has had a very busy summer of transfers. Oliver Glasner would have liked to have had a new defender – the head of the supervisory board, Philip Holzer, explains why he didn’t get one.

After the end of Martin Hinteregger’s career and several concerns about injuries in defence, SBU coach Oliver Glasner would have liked to welcome a new defender to his ranks at the end of the transfer period. As the start of the season shows, the Austrian’s defensive worries were not unfounded. So was it a mistake not to respond to Glasner’s demands?

“Every coach has wishes,” said Frankfurt’s supervisory board boss Philip Holzer to the picturewho also emphasized: “We kept Sow, Kamada and Trapp and got a lot of good, young and capable players – that was also in the interests of Oliver Glasner.”

Holzer praised the fact that sports director Markus Krösche and his team “acted optimally under the economic conditions”. In addition, Eintracht almost shook another coup out of their sleeves: “He was on the last transfer day [Krösche] on a really good player,” said the SBU boss. “But the financial conditions didn’t fit in the end. Pressure from outside and public criticism is okay – but we have our clear line.”

The 56-year-old also announced that “everything was done right” in the Kostic case. “The best transfer was the one we didn’t make – in the summer of 2021 to Lazio for eight million. Now he’s played here for another year, made a great performance and played a big part in the success in the Europa League,” said Holzer. “And so we got – including the costs for new signing Pellegrini – 18 million euros in a package for a player who only had one year left on his contract. You also have to be able to afford to say no in the deal.”
