Germany is and will remain a tenant country, around 58 percent of the people here live like this. In single-person households, it is even 70 percent. It is therefore mostly tenants who have to absorb additional costs for electricity and gas. According to Check 24 calculations, a model household with four people that consumes the equivalent of 20,000 kilowatt hours a year already pays an average of 3,415 euros. The new gas surcharge, which will come into effect on October 1, 2022, is not yet included.
