Consumer advocates appalled: This “poultry salami” actually contains pork

The poultry salami from a sausage manufacturer also contains pork – but this is only visible on the back of the packaging, the consumer advice center complains. Courts are already dealing with the case.

Those who choose chicken instead of pork in the supermarket often do so consciously: possibly because of religious reasons or because they simply appreciate the taste. It is all the more annoying when the chicken meat does contain pork and it is not immediately apparent to the consumer at first glance.

In such a case, the consumer advice center in Hamburg accuses the meat products factory Wiltmann from North Rhine-Westphalia of “misleading”. Specifically, it is about a chicken salami from the company. However, there is also pork bacon in the product – but this is only stated on the back. “What a mess!” Finds the Hamburg consumer center in a Facebook post. In your opinion, the addition “with pork fat” should be visible on the front.

Court judgment is not yet final

Such an approach is not forbidden, as consumer advocates also admit. However, the Minden Administrative Court had already decided at the beginning of 2020 that it was not enough if it was only read on the back that the salami also consists of pork bacon.

The judges assumed that the average consumer was “averagely informed, attentive and circumspect”. The description of the product as “poultry salami” is incorrect, since such a consumer expects it to contain only poultry meat.

Meat is on a grill

The Gütersloh district had previously complained about the packaging. However, the judgment of the Administrative Court is not yet final, the sausage manufacturer has appealed, which the Higher Administrative Court of Münster must now decide on.

According to the company, consumers are “fully informed” by the information on the packaging, said a spokesman for “24Hamburg.de”. If the legal situation changed, the packaging would be adjusted accordingly. Until then, consumers must take a close look.
