Sauna: What to look out for – and what to leave out

With New Year’s resolutions and the cold, the sauna is getting crowded again. What to look out for – and how good a sauna is for the body and mind.

More than two dozen naked men and women sit on wooden benches around a stove. They are all waiting for the “power of the forest”. Me too.

A young man comes in and greets with a long drawn out “Moin”. It’s the sauna master, he brings us the “power of the forest” – an infusion.

With the cold season and after all the New Year’s resolutions, the German sauna benches fill up again, offering warmth in the wet and cold days or relaxation after sport. I also sweat regularly.

The “power of the forest” consists of a birch broth that the sauna master pours on. His tools: a ladle and a large fan.
