How to take care of Sansevieria trifasciata?

These plants prefer a intense light and direct sun, accept a poorly lit environment, but little time. Gradually move them from shade to sunlight.

The cultivation temperature is throughout the year between 18 and 21 ° c. The minimum is 10 ° c.

Water moderately because the roots rot easily, especially in winter; at least half of the soil dry out between waterings. Do not allow water to stagnate in the rosette.

Smoke a little liquid fertilizer once a month in spring and summer is enough. Cultivation mixture composed of 1 part soil, peat and 2 sand. Drain the pot well.

Repot rarely, only when the roots have invaded the pot.

Can be obtained by two methods: by division of the rhizome or by the basal shoots in cuttings, both of which can be implemented from May to August.

In the first case, we take the plant out of the pot and, using a sharp knife, we cut into two or three sections, each bearing a few leaves, if possible a rosette, and a few roots. Each piece is potted in the culture mixture. The method consists of detaching the suckers from the mother plant and planting them in normal soil if they have roots, in a moist mixture of peat and sand in equal parts if they do not have any; wait until roots have formed before transplanting into the growing mix.

The Sansevieria species can also be propagated by leaf cuttings, but the yellow-edged varieties cannot because they then produce normal green leaves.

Focus on two species of Sansevieria trifasciata

t. “Hahnii” are dwarf plants. Its leaves 10 cm and 6 to 7 cm wide, are rigid, oval, emerging directly from a rhizome located just below the surface of the soil. They are green, marbled with yellow and gray.

Varieties:

  • t. “Golden Hahnii”, with leaves edged with broad golden yellow bands;
  • t. “Silver Hahnii”, with silvery green leaves, spotted with dark green.

Sansevieria trifasciata “Laurentii”

t. “Laurentii” is a variety with lanceolate, rigid, erect leaves of 1 m or more. The leaves have a pointed top that must not be broken because otherwise their growth will stop. Their color is dark marble green with wide golden yellow edges. The leaves come straight out of a large rhizome that sits barely below the soil surface. It is a slow growing plant that produces few new leaves every year.
