Sandro Wagner: This is how he went from being a second division striker to becoming an assistant coach for the DFB team

Many have wanted him in the dugout – now it’s official. Sandro Wagner, together with Benjamin Glück, will support the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann as assistant coach. Nagelsmann spoke of Wagner’s reaction: “Then it was typical for Sandro: the phone became very warm on my ear because it was burning very badly.” Wagner has already successfully looked after the national team in the friendly against France in a team with the two DFB sports directors Rudi Völler and Hannes Wolf.

His coaching career is still very manageable. At SpVgg Unterhaching he was promoted from A youth coach to head coach in 2021. This summer he achieved promotion to the third division with the professional team. Most recently, Wagner was assistant coach to Hannes Wolf, who trains the U20 national team.
