The champion of the regional league Bayern prevailed in the playoff second leg on Sunday against the north-east title holder Energie Cottbus 2-0 (1-0) and gave coach Sandro Wagner a perfect farewell. Mathias Fetsch (17th) and Simon Skarlatidis (90th + 3) scored the goals in a game overshadowed by fan riots. Upper Bavaria won the first leg 2-1 in Lausitz.

Around 20 minutes before the end of the game, the encounter had to be interrupted for around 15 minutes when Cottbus fans threw lamps and cups onto the pitch and pushed into the interior. Dozens of police officers tried to calm the situation. Tear gas was used. With an enormous police presence on the sidelines, the duel continued in front of 12,500 spectators and finally ended.

Former national striker Wagner announced weeks ago that he would leave the Munich suburbs at the end of the season. Where the 35-year-old is going is still unclear. It is said that he could switch to the Red Bull farm team FC Liefering in Austria’s second division. “For me, this is a sensational finish here. Mission accomplished,” said Wagner after the game and added: “We were just with ourselves. We looked at how we can hurt Cottbus. We’ve been preparing for these games for weeks. We knew that they didn’t like our style of play. They want a lot of possession and we didn’t give them possession periods. Or we give them a phase in possession of the ball in areas that don’t do them any good.
On Monday morning, Wagner’s final exam at the German Football Association (DFB) is on the agenda for his coaching license. “I’m not the biggest party beast. But today I have to step on the gas. (…) I can’t pull through at all. Unless the trainer turns a blind eye again,” he said with a smile.
