In order to isolate Russia even more effectively, the EU and the USA want to continue to work in close coordination. Top diplomats discuss next steps in Washington.

Against the background of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the EU and the US have started their strategic dialogue on Russia.

At the first meeting of the top diplomats as part of the format in Washington, the focus was, among other things, on coordinating policy to end the Ukraine war, as the US State Department announced. Both sides condemned the Kremlin’s “unjustified and barbaric war against Ukraine”. They also called for an immediate end to Russian military attacks on civilians.

Additional steps to further isolate Russia economically from the US and EU economies and from the international financial system were also a topic, the ministry said. Both sides urged China not to undermine the sanctions imposed on Russia and not to support the Kremlin’s aggression in any way.

The next meeting of top EU-US diplomats for a strategic dialogue on Russia is planned for the end of the year, the statement said. The format was agreed at the summit between the European Union and the United States in June last year. Both sides had decided to “coordinate the policies and measures of the US and the EU in relation to Russia”.
