With the T5 Evo, Samsung is presenting an external SSD with 8 TB capacity for the first time – but the manufacturer also costs a lot for the extra storage. The recommended retail price is around 600 euros.
When it comes to external SSD hard drives, manufacturer Samsung has so far limited itself to capacities of up to four terabytes, which can be found in the flagship model Portable T9. With the T5 Evo, the company now wants to bring a more compact and, above all, a solution with more capacity onto the market, because for the first time eight terabytes of storage space is possible in an external Samsung SSD.
However, this also costs Samsung a lot, as the RRP for the 8 TB variant is just under 590 euros. The smaller versions, on the other hand, come with a price tag of 180 euros (2 TB) and 320 euros (4 TB). Aside from the pricing, the T5 Evo SSD is primarily based on compactness: with dimensions of 9.5 x 4 x 1.7 centimeters and a weight of 102 grams, the portable hard drive should be easy to carry.
The connection is a single USB-C port (3.2 Gen 1), which is supposed to work with transfer rates of 5 Gbit/s. The compatibility of the SSD is guaranteed with Windows, MacOS and Android. In terms of speed, however, the T5 Evo is clearly slower than the flagship model T9; Here Samsung specifies values of 460 MB/s for writing and reading. However, this still means you can travel much faster than with “conventional external hard drives,” as the manufacturer states Press release emphasized.
