Salzburg Festival: Interview with the new “Everyman” Michael Maertens – culture

It’s a terribly hot day in Salzburg, on the press terrace on the roof of the Festspielhaus there’s not a breath of air, even in the early evening. Michael Maertens arrives on time, he would rather leave on time, the children are alone and he is a “helicopter father”, as he says. Since 2009 the man from Hamburg has been part of the ensemble of the Burgtheater in Vienna. This summer he receives the higher Austrian orders: he has the title role in “Jedermann”, the indestructible “play about the dying of the rich man” by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. In Salzburg, this is a world spectacle, performed in front of the cathedral every summer festival. The premiere is this Friday.
