When Salman Rushdie steps onto the stage of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, he is greeted with thunderous applause and you can feel how much he is enjoying it. In 1989, after Iranian leader Khomeini’s fatwa, he felt abandoned by some intellectuals. Hadn’t he gone too far with the “satanic verses”? The question no longer arises. Daniel Kehlmann and Deniz Yücel came to the Deutsches Theater, as did Thea Dorn and Cem Özdemir. Today, wherever Rushdie appears, he is surrounded by nothing but cheers, nothing but love – a word that appears more often in his book “Knife” than almost any other.
